A cheap breakfast nowadays is hard to find. The man on the street knows that inflation has hit badly when his nasi lemak every morning starts costing more than the RM1 he used to pay. Or when his breakfast starts costing him double of what it uses to. One way he can try to save on breakfast is by eating packing breakfast from home. However, there are times when he simply wants to enjoy an easy weekend morning breakfast without the hassle of preparation and some social company. Where to go then without breaking your bank?

Where else but Ikea for their 99 cents breakfast?! Find out what you can get for 99 cents nowadays after the jump!

I’ve heard a lot about Ikea’s 99 cents breakfast and finally got a chance to try it. The restaurant was very crowded for an early Sunday morning. Everyone was obviously there to take advantage of the cheap breakfast and free coffee if you are an Ikea Friends member! The menu is rotated regularly and today’s special for 99 cents was a plate of fried mee siam with sambal or 2 mini char siew paus.

So what do you get for 99 cents?

See the amount of fishcakes they included?

This was mee siam fried with lots of fish cake and bean sprouts. I was rather surprised to see the number of fish cake slices they had in it as I had expected an empty plate of mee siam! It tasted a little bland though and the sambal it came with tasted like it came out from an instant chilli mix. We also noticed that some people who came earlier seemed to have bigger portions of the mee siam. The portion size isn’t really standard and it really depends on the server who’s scooping it for you. Lots of children were tucking into steamed char siew paus. I was tempted to try one but I recalled that BabeKL had mentioned that they were mostly dough instead of filling.

I guess for the price we paid (RM1.05 per plate plus tax), we can’t really complain! It is a good sized portion for one although bigger eaters might find it insufficient. Apparently nasi lemak is served on other days for variety and for the same cheap price.

Have the 99 cent breakfast together with your free Ikea Friends REFILLABLE coffee and there isn’t really any other place you can get a cheap breakfast with free flow of coffee in an airconditioned restaurant! :)

That’s not “mee siam”.. It’s just fried beehoon/mihun goreng.
